FLY FISHING CLASSES

The San Juan Angler offers an Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Our classes are 3 hours and take place in Durango at one of the many parks located along the Animas River.

The cost of the class is $150 per person. This price covers all equipment needed. Expenses not included are a Colorado Fishing License and guide gratuity. A Colorado Fishing License can be purchased at the Shop for $19.01 per person for a day.

The classes are 3 hours long with about an hour learning basic casting techniques. The second hour focuses on the equipment (rods/reels/tools), gear (tippet/leader/accessories), rigging, styles of fishing, etc. And finally, in the last hour, we dress out in waders and boots and move into the river. There we focus on reading the water, entomology (the study of insects), fish behavior, casting with a full setup rig and possibly putting a fish in the net.

The Intro to Fly Fishing Class was designed for the complete beginner. This is not a guided trip but rather a fast track to understanding the basics of this great sport. We offer classes 7-days a week, both morning and afternoons. We prefer at least 24-hour notice but can usually accommodate in short notice.

To ensure a high-quality experience, the maximum number of anglers one instructor can accommodate is limited to three. We offer multiple instructors for groups over three but cap each class at 6-total participants.

Please contact the shop at 970.382.9978 with any further questions or to sign up for our Intro to Fly Fishing Class.
