The Pine River
There are two sections to the Pine (Los Pinos). The upper section above Vallecito Dam and the lower section below the dam.
This is an excellent river in the Weminuche Wilderness. It requires a flat 3 mile hike into the Wilderness to get access. So it requires a willingness for a little exercise. It boasts excellent dry fly fishing during the summer and has quite large fish for a high mountain stream.
Equipment: Because of the hike in, a pack rod would be ideal. Any 5 piece #4 or #5 is fine. A lighter rod would also work.
Flies: Mostly terrestrial and caddis patterns. Stimulators, ants, hoppers, crickets and dry attractors.
An excellent tailwater accessed through private property and therefore very underfished. Unless one can gain access through private land it is off limits. We have access to the mile below the dam. It is an excellent fishery with large fish. It is just 15 minutes from Durango.
It is a wide river with good structure. Both good nyphing and dry fly fishing depending on the conditions. It is very picturesque.
Equipment. 9’ 5# at the least because the water holds large fish and runs quite fast in places. Any lighter equipment and there will be no hope in controlling a hooked fish. It is also wide so it will need the ability at some times to be able to place the fly at a distance.
Flies: Pheasant tails, Hare’s Ear, Caddis emerger, Elk hair caddis, CDC Caddis, Disco midge, CB micro mayfly.
