The Animas River
The Animas river flows right through Durango. It is a Colorado Gold medal water supporting 60 pounds of fish per acre comprising at least 12 trout measuring a minimum of 14 inches. It is one of the last free flowing undiverted rivers in Colorado.
As it is a freestone running through Durango, a quick downpour will put color into the river shutting down fishing for a time until it clears. Therefore it can be temperamental, particularly when there is any wet weather.
The river is wide and is an easily accessible river for wading. There is a bike path running along the river bank through town giving very easy access to anyone will to walk a little.
The Animas has a little known reputation for its caddis hatches. This is only because it has not been adequately publicized. In the hatches it is equal to anything in the State. The hatches extend from May through June and July. In addition it has a big mayfly population, affording great dry fly fishing when they are coming off. There is also a stonefly population.
It can be either floated or waded. As it is a freestone, the floating is subject to the water level which obviously falls as the run-off abates during the summer and into Autumn. So the floating is limited to a few months in each year.
Apart from great dry fly fishing with the caddis, there is also great streamer fishing with a number of large fish, predominantly brown trout.
Equipment: Because it is a big river, if one is nymphing one would prefer a longer rod for control and distance. Therefore a 9’ 5# would be a good start. But for dry fly, one can go a little lighter depending on one’s preference.
Flies: Popular caddis patterns are: Olive elk hair, Tan elk hair, Peacock cdc, Goddard, Henryville,
For nymphing, try Flashback pheasant taisl, copper johns, rs2, prince nymphs, eggs,
For BWO’s try parachute Adams #14 - #20, Parachute BWO’s #14 - #20. Gulper specials #16 - #20.
When the water gets colored up, try flashback princes and formerly prince patterns.
