san juan fisihing reports

April 29th. The weather has warmed up some and as a consequence the respite in the color in the water has ended. It is beginning to color up more on the Animas. Visibility is about 1ft so it is a matter of fishing the edges or the quieter water where the flow is less intense. The fish continue to take streamers. As the water colors, provided there is not too much material the fish will continue to feed. So use nymphs with flashbacks or epoxy. Streamers with some flash in them and any larger attractors with something which the fish will see. San juan sparkle worms will work as well.

April 25th. After several days of cold weather the freeze has set in at the highest elevations slowing down the melt. Consequently the rivers are beginning to clear a little and offering good streamer fishing. The color is never the problem, it is just the material in the water which disturbs the fish, so as the flows drop, the water is running over clear ground and the fish will move out and begin feeding more. So fishing in the slower water near structure or using streamers, colored san juan worms with a little flash, flashback hare's ears and FKA princes is going to work well.

April 26th. The local rivers remain blown out at the moment so the best fishing is either on the San Juan or in the local lakes where Jerome has been having some good pike fishing on streamers.

April 24th. Jerome reported some great local pike fishing on the Trina bullet head streamer.

April 20th. The Animas River is running at 960 cfs in Town and 640cfs below pump house. The condition is slightly turbid . The best approach is to fish close to banks or in the clearer feeder streams.

Flies: Bright and dark colored streamers. Caddis larva and midge patterns have been working in the clearer water.

As some of the rivers begin to pick up some color, and the local lakes and reservoirs thaw there has been some lake action for pike. Jerome and Matt had a good day out getting a nice haul.

There is always some good fishing somewhere!
