"Durango Fly Fishing"
Durango Fly Fishing Rivers
The Durango area and surrounds holds an excellent array of fishing waters from all year round tailwaters to freestone rivers for Durango Fly fishing enthusiasts.
Freestone rivers such as the Animas also provide excellent year round Durango fly fishing depending on run-off. There are other Durango fly fishing waters such as the Pine, the Florida, the Piedra which provide excellent local fly fishing experiences.
In addition there are local lakes and reservoirs which provide great fishing access including great pike fly fishing trips.
For those who want to enjoy a backcountry fly fishing trip, there are many small creeks and streams including great wilderness fly fishing opportunities such as the upper Pine.
From big water for floating and wading the edges, to small mountain streams where the oversize fish haven't been disturbed for weeks (if ever) we have a range of fishing available in this area which will rival any place in the world for back country high mountain trout fishing.
These different waters offer a range of fly fishing fishing experiences from the small midge and bwo San Juan River fly fishing to great caddis and mayfly fly fishing on the local rivers and streams. In addition there is excellent float fishing which accommodates streamer action on the Animas River right through Durango. So there is something for all fishermen all year round. There are a number of local lakes which are accessible and offer good fishing alternatives when the rivers are off or if someone just wants something different.
Puett Lake good fishing for pike and small mouth when the conditions suit. We have access to Electra lake (daily rod fee of $60 for two anglers on a boat) and have had very good reports for brookies, bows & cutbows from there.
There is also some great local bass fishing. Steve Linn reports:
"June is a great time for smallmouth fishing on Navajo and Vallecito. 10-20 fish days are very common with action throughout the day.
Fish clear water, points and sunken islands 15-20ft deep. Clouser minnows and crayfish patterns are a sure hit.
I highly recommend Rio Aqualux clear intermediate line, you can get it at San Juan Anglers in Durango."
